We have just returned to Canada after an unforgettable tour in Gujarat. This was the first trip to India for all 5 of us and it was wonderful in so many ways. Soar Excursions put together a short tour for us, focusing on both wildlife and culture, which made it very easy for us to see more of Gujarat after having attended a family wedding in Vadodara. Our tour leader Aditya is a fantastic birder, photographer, and guide. We were very impressed with his knowledge of the history and culture of the region that we visited as well as his expertise in locating and identifying birds and other wildlife. Rick, the one serious birder in our group, saw over 140 species and the rest of us learned to recognize many new ones and developed a sincere appreciation for the diversity and beauty of Indian wildlife. We saw Egyptian vultures, flamingos, sarus cranes, Indian coursers, Dalmatian pelicans, wild asses, desert fox, wild boars, langurs, and crocodiles. We were also very pleased with the cultural components of our tour. From visits to historical sites such as the Modhera sun temple and the helical step well to the memorable time spent learning about salt production in the Little Rann of Kutch, watching basket making with a family in a tribal village, and sampling chai made with fresh water buffalo milk on a small farm, we all got so much out of this trip. Everything – food, accommodation, transportation as well as the selection of fascinating places to visit – was looked after for us so well that we could just relax and enjoy the whole experience.
